Week Three of Now What online is dedicated to the vivid coming of age short Mangas, written and directed by Theo Krekis.
A young Greek boy desperately wants to become a man quicker than he’s becoming one, so sets about performing a series of manly tasks.
Mangas was Theo Krekis’s writer-director debut and premiered at the BFI London Film Festival 2018. With a strong eye for visual comedy and striking art direction from Sophie Fletcher, Mangas digs deeper than most coming of age comedies thanks to its richly constructed tableaus and colourful portrayal of young life in the Greek Orthodox community. Theo imbibes his simple and efficient story of a boy yearning for manhood with poignant moments of male intimacy and pubertal confusion, amplifying the inner solitude that often comes with masculine expectation.
Theo is a Greek/British writer and director. His latest short film, PRAM SNATCHER, is being funded by the BFI and co-produced by BAFTA nominated production company Try Hard and Mumbo Jumbo. Alongside this Theo has been selected for the 4STORIES scheme where he will direct one of Channel 4’s BAFTA nominated On the Edge anthology short films, SUPERDAD. His previous short, MEMOIRS OF A GEEZA, was long-listed for a BAFTA and premiered at the BFI London Film Festival 2019, London Short Film Festival 2020 and BFI Flare 2020. Theo graduated with a Distinction in an MA in Screenwriting from The London Film School.
